This month has seen the release of the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. I will freely admit to owning every edition of the game except for Rogue Trader as I think my ex wife may have taken her vengeance out upon that one. I enjoy playing the game, I like the modelsi would go as far as to say that back in the day I may have perhaps been a fan boy.
For every edition of the game that was released I have been some what excited by the event, my fiancée will tell you last edition I was at the local Games Workshop first thing in the morning to collect my copy. (oh the shame) This time I am not excited by the release neither am I dreading it im just kind of meh about the whole thing. I know there are many changes in the new edition and hopefully my beloved Iron Warriors will be getting a new codex soon. I just don’t seem to have an interest this time, now my copy that I ordered from a 3rd party retailer is not here yet and that’s fine im not bothered by that. Am I buying this rulebook just for completion sake or for the occasional game? Is only for the occasional casual game? I don’t know if its because of my ever increasing years or my move into other war games such as Dystopian Wars and Warmachine. Have I found my gaming fix else where or am I simply burnt out on 40k.
Have I reached the point of market saturation where I have too many choices and the old favourites are gone to the side? Could it be that I can’t be bothered to learn another set of these rules? I know that it has nothing to do with the price of the game as I have my armies and intend only a few tweaks. So why am I not bothered by it, on the other hand I am looking forward with great expectation to the future releases from Privateer Press, have I simply switched one system to another? Tonight sees the last game of 5th for us at [elg] a small informal 4 player battle to close the lid on the last edition, I am looking forward to that Iron warriors and Thousand sons versus Blood Angels and White Scars. We are going to get slaughtered, but it still will be fun no matter the outcome.
